Understanding What Is Meant By a 'Direct Cremation'

A ‘direct cremation’ which sometimes is known as a 'pure cremation' or 'unattended funeral' or as a 'simple no fuss approach', is a cremation without any family or friends present at a funeral. But here is why its not an Amanda-Louise Lady Funeral Directors Services direct cremation:-

Amanda-Louise Funeral Director Services' funeral home is at 3 Blenheim Road, Minehead, TA24 5PY

You've probably seen one of the TV ads from online funeral providers talking about a 'no fuss' approach, or heard people having to have an unattended cremation during the covid pandemic times, as a minimalist and cost-effective option for handling the cremation of someone who has died. Some of these telesales approaches even tout that they are cheaper than using a local independent funeral director thus removing their fees, and explaining that family and friends can have a funeral service, even stating that some 'direct cremation packages' cut corners, to misleading people further by stating "but now many funeral directors offer ‘direct cremations’, which means they will collect the person who has died, and often keep them at their own premises, rather than a climate-controlled, secure mortuary."

In our opinion, we at Amanda-Louise Lady Funeral Directors Services, offer genuine and flexible choices, and more dignified 'direct pure cremation' services - and we are proud of that! So lets explore the actual facts......

Amanda-Louise Lady Funeral Directors offer direct cremations across Taunton, Wellington, Bridgwater and across Somerset

Is our direct cremations an unattended funeral?

Typically yes, and that's what keeps the costs low as you are not paying for use of the Crematorium's Chapel.

However you can hire our beautiful chapel in Minehead to hold a service, Monday to Saturday day or evening, then we have an unattended cremation whereby we take the coffin to either Taunton or Sedgemoor Crematorium. Or you can choose to arrange a separate gathering to celebrate their life at a time and place after the cremation has taken place.

But we go further in our options. If a small number of relatives wish to accompany us to the crematorium, then we can arrange that too.

These options are still more affordable than a traditional funeral – on average, less than half the cost.

Direct Cremations Cut Corners

Not with us!

"Direct" isnt about which funeral services you use, whether you use a local funeral director or an online tv ad funeral service, they will both have costs chargeable. "Direct" means no funeral ceremony.

As a quality assured local funeral home, we have invested to have a state of the art clinical and hygienic mortuary in our funeral home (and not in a warehouse, garage or off site facility), which as we are part of SAIF (the over arching trade association for independent funeral directors) they independently inspect our premises, policies and procedures and us, so you know your loved one is safe with us.

If family members wish to spend time with their loved one whilst in our care, they can with us, We can change their clothing, and you can even help us prepare them if thats important to you such as washing, applying makeup or perfume or placing treasured photos or favourite teddy bear with them in their coffin if thats important to you.

Our premium coffins used are quality made in the UK and have met the British Standards.

We arrange the date and time of the cremation (we let the family know when this will take place); we take the coffin to the crematorium in our funeral director attire, we enter via the front door of the crematorium's chapel listening to a piece of music you have chosen in remembrance, we gently place the coffin onto the catafalque (the podium at the end of the altar), and as an award winning funeral directors, we step back and bow paying our respects in their last passage of life as the curtains slowly close, before we exit. We then telephone the family member to say all went well.

We'll return to the crematorium to collect the cremated ashes on your behalf, and we keep them safe in our funeral home . We can deliver the ashes back to you at home if you wish, or you can collect from us.

Ultimately using a reputable local independent funeral directors (in comparison to online funeral services), funeral directors mean we'll be trained specialists and many are part of the SAIF organisation, giving you an indication they are quality assured professionals.
