Does Funerals Have An Impact on Our Climate?

In brief, yes they do. This is because of the emissions and resource consumption caused by each funeral, whether that be cremation or traditional burial. Natural burials on the other hand have lesser impact.

Our Climate Action

Here at Amanda-Louise Funeral Services, we have always been a forward facing funeral directors, caring about not only the departed, the families, our communities but also our environment for our future generations.

Since May 2024 we have been in collaboration with Carma Earth who help individuals and businesses plant trees in the UK and overseas. By doing so, Carma Earth supports Veterans in their mental wellbeing and into employment as the Veterans actually plant those trees.

Our Results

Since May 2024 we have funded for 117 trees/kelp to be planted (of which 97 of them were in the UK), with 37 unique species planted resulting in 35tco2e* (the amount of carbon we have offset).

*At Carma, we use a conservative baseline of 0.3 tonnes (300kg) of CO₂ sequestered per planted tree over its lifetime. We choose this figure to ensure we never overclaim our impact, adhering to a 'science-first' approach that accounts for ecological reality rather than best-case scenarios. Our planting portfolio combines Mangroves—which absorb carbon up to four times faster than terrestrial forests and store it securely in blue-carbon soil—with native English Broadleaf and Saxon species, which provide long-term stability and biodiversity. While a mature English Oak can sequester over 1 tonne of CO₂ in a century, and Mangroves work rapidly in early years, we average these distinct growth curves. We also factor in natural mortality buffers (planting extra trees to ensure survival rates). This means the 0.3-tonne figure is a robust, guaranteed minimum average over a 25-40 year maturity cycle, not a theoretical maximum.
